Why I Have Such a Special Connection with Betty

As most of you all know, my mom disappeared on May 25, 2001. 25 years later and we are no close to answers/closure. The man that she was last seen with passed away, so I fear we will never get answers. The grief of not knowing is crushing. But, I found a little bit of healing with Betty.

In 2025, my husband and I tried to adopt a dog named Anna. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out with her. She kept attacking our other dogs, so we had to return her to the rescue (this was during a trial period to see if she would work out with our family). I was devastated. I felt so bad for her, because I want all dogs to have good, loving homes. But, I couldn’t keep her and risk the well being of my other dogs.

About a month later, we came across Betty. She was this teeny, tiny little Chihuahua with the biggest ears. I immediately wanted her. My husband agreed. We picked her up and fostered her with the intention to adopt. We just wanted to make sure all of the dogs got along. They have done great since day one! We officially adopted Betty in May 2025.

Around this same time, Betty had a brother. His name is Pip. He was adopted to a nice lady and has been living the good life. Her and I exchange photos, comments, etc. in a Facebook group for the families that have adopted from the rescue.

Fast forward to May 2026, the 25 year anniversary of my mom’s disappearance. I made a post about it on Facebook, as I usually do. One of my mom’s friend’s shared the post and Pip’s mom commented on it! I was like, “oh they are friends, that’s neat.” It was so much more…it turns out that Pip’s mom is the daughter of the detective that first worked my mom’s case. I was shocked and instantly knew that my mom sent Betty to me to help me heal.

And she has, in ways I didn’t even know I needed.
